Former Attorney General and senior Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Rafiq-ul Haq has died (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilahi Raziun). He was 85 years old at the time of his death.

On october 24, Saturday he takes his last breathed at around 8:30 am while undergoing treatment at Ad-Din Hospital in the capital. Ad-Din Hospital Director Professor Nahid Yasmin confirmed the news.

He was admitted to Ad-Din Hospital in Maghbazar on Friday evening, October 16 due to aging complications including anemia and urinary problems. At that time, his physical condition was bad.

The former attorney general was undergoing treatment at Ad-Din Hospital in the capital’s Maghbazar due to physical illness.

On october 17, Saturday he recovered a bit and returned home in the morning . He was admitted to the hospital again in the afternoon.

It is known that the veteran lawyer was suffering from anemia, urinary problems and other age-related complications. He was care of under Dr. Richmond Roland Gomez.

Earlier in June, Barrister Rafiq-ul-Haq was under close observation at Ad-Din Hospital when his condition deteriorated due to Diabetes. Then he stayed at the paltan’s house and recovered with treatment.

His mobility has been limited since he underwent surgery on his left knee in 2017. Due to this he has not been able to move normally for the last 3 years.

Mr. Haq spent most of the last days of his life lying in bed. He used to move in a wheelchair.

Barrister Rafiq-ul Haq was born on 2 November 1935 in the village of Subarnapur in Calcutta. He was the chief legal officer of the state from April 7, 1990 to December 17 of the same year. He was the sixth Chief Law Officer (Attorney General) of the state.

He graduated from Calcutta University in 1955 and obtained his master’s degree in philosophy in 1957. Passed LLB in 1958. He completed Bar at Law from the United Kingdom in 1962. He started his legal career in 1965 as a lawyer in the Supreme Court and in 1973 as a lawyer in the Appellate Division. He has spent more than 60 years in the legal profession in his colorful life.

Barrister Rafiq-ul Haq has worked with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Ziaur Rahman, Hussain Muhammad Ershad, current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia at different times.

He fought a fearless legal battle for the two leaders while they were in jail during the previous military-backed caretaker government.

At the same time, he did not hesitate to criticize the two leaders.

Barrister Haq has always been vocal in establishing good governance in the country and protecting the independence and image of the judiciary.
